So, I have an idea of why more people don't farm. At least in Oklahoma. In OK, our average last frost date is April 15 (ask me at what age I learned that.......go ahead.......... 14, yeah I was a weird kid), at which point Spring is officially here. Which means that we get rain and warmer weather with cool (not cold) nights. So this year our last frost was right on schedule and I'm gearing up for planting, but wait. No rain and HOT weather. That's fine, we work on the chicken coop, because putting plants out when it's too hot will kill them too. So we'll just be patient for a few days, or WEEKS. Because after the strange summer-esque weather, we got late winter-esque weather. Literally, one day it was 80, the next it was 40. THREE, count 'em, THREE weeks later, it's now raining and normal spring weather. And I haven't gotten a break long enough in the rain to actually get anything planted. The poor chickens are just now in their luxurious new coop, in the rain, and my beds are empty, waiting for a break in the rain to get anything planted. In central Oklahoma, we had been in a horrible drought, since at least November (when we moved in), now we're not, and I'm just asking for a gorgeous day in the high 60's-low 70's with sunny skies to get ANYTHING planted.
R has frequently asked me to turn off the rain at night (not really the rain, but the thunder and lightning, but she asks me to turn off the rain). I have told her many times that God turns the rain on and off. And we have been thanking God in our nighttime prayers for all the wonderful rain. But Saturday, as it was POURING - AGAIN, R says, "God's making it rain too much, Momma." Ha! I thought it was so funny. Although I'm grateful for the life-giving rain, I'd like a nice day to get my life-giving and -sustaining crops in the ground! It's getting to the point, where if we have a nice day, I might tell Daddy to call in sick so we can get it all done! (SHH! Don't tell!).
I hope you all are surviving the weather where you are! Here, we need goloshes, winter coats, and shorts!
