Sunday Update

It's hard to believe that my (original) chicks are going to be 2 weeks old tomorrow. I can't believe that I've already had them 2 full weeks! They're so healthy, I thought I would have lost at least one of them by now, due to my overwhelming ignorance when it comes to all things chicken. But, not only have those survived, but they're thriving and slowly allowing the "newbies" to intermingle. You would have thought that the 8 babies had leprocy or something they way the 27 bigger, older chickens crowded and clamored to get away from them. All but one, anyways. One of the new austrolorps (black) decided that it refused to have anything to do with the chicks her own age, and would only hang out with the older chicks. Most of them are now mingling quite well and have withstood little underhanded pecks every now and again. The older chicks are molting seriously and have lost almost all of their fuzzy cuteness. Yet another reason to get more chicks (not anymore anytime soon, though). They are about the size of a full-grown average bird now, and only 4 more weeks until they're ready to go outside for good! I can't wait for that day. I hope they can forage alright, because I refuse to go out there and feed them all summer long when there's plenty of healthy bugs and grass waiting to be eaten. Crossing my fingers that they aren't totally stupid.
R is still enamored with her chicken. She can't stand it when I won't let her pet her hen. I don't know what we're going to do when it gets big and she won't leave it alone. But, her hen is the only one that will lay white eggs, so I'm sure she'll love having "her" hen's eggs and such. She is such a country girl at heart. I'm so thankful that we get to raise her out here with all this room and the opportunities to experience real food. What a blessing!
Hope your week is off to a fantastic start!
