Ahh, yes. The much anticipated yearly curriculum update. Well, this year is going to be full for sure. R will be starting her 1st-2nd-3rd-4th grade year and we're all pretty excited.
Here's the rundown.
Core (History, Geography, Bible, Dictation) - Sonlight - Core D
Art - Usborne Book of Art
Grammar - Shurley Level 3
Handwriting - A Reason for Handwriting - Level B
Latin - Prima Latina
Math - Saxon 2 and 3
Reading - Sonlight - Core D Advanced Readers
Science - Sonlight - Core B
Writing - Understanding Writing
Memory Work - Classical Conversations - Cycle 2
Yes, we are starting Latin this year. I'm pretty excited about it. Sam and I both took Latin in high school (not that I remember much), but this Latin curriculum is designed to help kids understand Grammar and provide a good foundation for starting a foreign language.
We did not finish Saxon 2 this past year. We are a little over half way, so we'll finish that first then move into Saxon 3. Partway through the school year, I noticed that R was having trouble with her Math work, so we slowed down and we're only doing 2 lessons a week instead of 4. It's now gotten easier and she's flying through, so I have no doubt she'll be ready to go back to 4 lessons a week in a couple of weeks when we start third grade.
And yes, this is technically her third grade year, though we're doing a mix of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade work. The joys of homeschooling.
So that's that.
So far we're enjoying everything we use. I kinda obsessively research all of my curriculum choices, and I'm really glad my research pays off with subjects that work well with what we have going.
Not gonna lie, this year seems like it's full, but most of the subjects are a pretty light load on a daily basis, so I think it'll work well, even with all of the subjects.
I'd love to hear what you're using! And I can answer any questions you have about my stuff.

Just read through some of you blog after reading your baby post :) We are doing CC Cycle 2 this year too. We did cycle 1 in fist grade, took a year off and are doing again this year. We did Prima Latina last year and Aidan is doing Latina Christiana 1 this year. It is a great program. Between that and the Latin in CC, he is really doing well.
ReplyDeleteI hope you school year is going well so far!
