I taught R to cross stitch yesterday. I found a cute little Tinkerbell kit at Hancock's the other day while buying some baby gift supplies and decided it was worth a shot.
The gamble paid off. BIG time. She thinks she is hot stuff with her "stitching." I recently started Baby D's quilt and thought we could do our sewing together once she got the hang of it.
She is really taking off. And, it is something she looks forward to, which gives her motivation to get her chores and schoolwork done quickly so she can get back to stitching! I would not be at all surprised if she finishes this one in a week. It is very simple, but she has picked it up and really enjoys it. More than I ever thought she would.
I have lofty dreams of she and I crafting together - cross stitching, making quilts, clothes, and other things... I also have this old-fashioned dream in my head that when she gets engaged (after she turns 30 - ha!), we will make a quilt of some of her favorite clothes to take with her to her new home. Something with fond memories to begin her new family with. I know that I'll cherish the time spent bent over our quilting hoops together and I hope it will give us some time together as women.
But, for now, while I hover over her helping her make neat stitches, I'm cherishing this bond we now have. This urge to create and make beauty together. And I feel somehow connected to the mothers and daughters of long ago, working with their hands to beautify their families and their homes, together.
I think that's my favorite part though.
Together.
