The seedling countdown has begun. The piglet countdown has begun. The kidding (goat birthing) countdown has begun. And of course, the countdown to B's first birthday has begun! As you can see, April is a very busy month and I am extremely glad that next year we won't have school to worry about.
So the countdown: Our average last frost date is April 15th. I'll look at the 7-day forecast the night before, and barring any uncommonly low temps, the seedlings are going in the ground on the 15th. I will reclaim my dining room! (on a funny note, B decided that those funny looking brown blocks on the floor must be tasted today. He got a mouthful, then tried to go back for more! I guess it was his (and my) initiation into boyhood). Stuff going in the ground that day: herbs, onions, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beans, potatoes (late, but oh well), squash, cucumbers, and winter squash. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but you get the idea. We will be very busy that day.
We will get piglets on Saturday. I think we're getting 3, but it might only be 2. We're splitting the litter of 6 with some friends, and we haven't nailed down the details yet. Nonetheless, the fencing came today to keep them penned up in the front 'yard' around our pond. So Mr. P and I will be putting that up after dinner.
**Correction: Mr. P and I will be hoeing the garden, then putting up the fence. Because what's one more thing???**
Goats will be having babies (kids) any day. One of our girls definitely has more than one, I'm thinking at least twins, maybe triplets. She's HUGE. She's due in 10 days, but could go as early as 5. Guess we'd better get our birthing stall ready! We have another first timer that's due in about 10 or 12 days, but I don't think she'll go early but I guess we'll find out! One of our girls was exposed to a buck, but we don't think she took, but she might have a surprise for us after all. Not counting on it though.
And my baby boy will be turning 1 on the 30th! I can't believe how fast this year has gone by. We're having a party for him the first week of May, so I should probably get going on that as well :)
So, this is the life of a farmer in April. Always something, and I wouldn't change a thing!
